Pregnancy and Childbirth

Pregnancy is a special time during which the body undergoes a great deal of physical and emotional changes. Acupuncture can be safely used to alleviate specific symptoms during pregnancy, such as nausea.

Breech position

Acupuncture can help turn a baby in breech position. Treatment, ideally commencing at week 34, generally involves one or two treatments and includes instructions on how to apply moxa (smouldering of the herb Artemisia) to enable treatment at home on a daily basis.

Preparing for labour

Acupuncture can also be offered as a routine pre-birth treatment on a weekly basis between 36 and 40 weeks. The aim is to help build the mother’s energy and prepare the body for an efficient labour and promote the optimal position of the baby. It is also beneficial for the birthing partner to attend one of the sessions to learn acupressure points to use during labour to help with pain relief. Acupuncture treatment can also be given from week 41 to encourage spontaneous labour.
